Is there a way to split one channel into several by note?

Post by Ascension » Mon Mar 07, 2011 6:00 pm

Say I have my bassline on one channel, and I use a lot of different notes in the scale. Is there a way that I could take all the notes in that one channel and split it up into a new number of channels, equal to the number of unique notes used. Each new channel would only contain 1 of the notes from the first channel (wherever it's used in the channel). The idea is to break up a single channel bassline so you could easily eq each note separately.

So say you use A, C and E throughout a track in your bassline. This would split that channel into 3 channels, one with just A is used, one for C and one for E (and also copy the synth and effects). There's a way to do this in logic and cubase, which have a split by pitch option.

I'm on Ableton 8.2.1 on windows 7.

You could set up a chain and use multiband dynamics to specify which frequency you want then solo it. Add an EQ to that chain.

throw an instrument rack into that channel, then make a chain for each note, using the key zones to assign the right key to each chain. Then throw in instrument and efx into each cahin.

So this would have a rack controlling each separate note all on the same channel?

Key zones are really cool. You can map a knob so that every turn (0-127th of a turn) you get a new instrument. I think pepezabala is suggesting that you put the same instrument into the key zone for each note that you use, and then apply different effects for each instance of the instrument.

This worked just how I wanted it to, thanks!

Not at my computer right now to try, so this might be a dumb question, but can I save empty racks for different scales? I'm not sure if the racks (after the first one) go away when I delete the instrument/fx in them.

You can surely save racks. Live has a lot of instruments that are racks. The manual does a pretty good job explaining the different kind of racks.
