How do I make those quick pitch slides on notes?
How do I make those quick pitch slides on notes?
Hello Ableton World, I was wondering how to make those quick pitch slides on notes that you are hearing quite a bit latley, In alot of songs it sounds like they are using one Note With a synth but doing quick up and down pitch slides to make the rhythm out of it. Any help with this would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Thank you

Could be an arpeggiator, could be glide/portamento, could be wobble...
Any examples?

Off the top of my head.... Chuckie - Let the bass kick, LMFAO - Party rock anthem.. Not very good examples but thats the jist of it

Yeah, that sounds like portamento/glide.
Many/most synths will let you control that. Operator, Sampler, Simpler all have glide controls. Turn 'em on, set it to 1 voice, and mess around with the glide time til you find a sound you like.

I took me an embarassingly long time to realise that you don't need a midi controller with a pitch bend knob to do portamento - if you open the envelopes in the midi clip you can control pitch bend from there just by drawing it in.

This is the obvious solution but I have been struggling on a lot of 3rd party synths like Sylenth; if you record the pitch modulation from your pitch wheel as your playing then how can you see the pitch envelope if it's not in the pull down on that instrument track's automation pulldown? And is there a way to check/uncheck parameters that you want to be able to have visible in the pulldown for an instrument?Cezband wrote:I took me an embarassingly long time to realise that you don't need a midi controller with a pitch bend knob to do portamento - if you open the envelopes in the midi clip you can control pitch bend from there just by drawing it in.

Wunjo: I'm not in front of Live so I could be wrong, but isn't the pitch bend envelope part of the generic envelope settings for any midi clip in Live - regardless of if that midi is feeding a first or third party device? If you've got a midi clip, it should be usable....I think.

Re: How do I make those quick pitch slides on notes?
Well from what I understand, anytime you want to automate something on a track then you have to select the pulldown by the track name and select the parameter. Different devices have different parameters but you would think that they would have pitch on every instrument/midi track regardless but I can't seem to locate it. And from my research I think that Live doesn't record pitch information in an envelope sense but records it in Midi CC land which if thats the case then i'm lost because I don't know where to find those parameters. There has to be an easy way, because all of the electro/glitch producers are heaves on the pitch modulations so i'm lost. Thanks for the input btw!Cezband wrote:Wunjo: I'm not in front of Live so I could be wrong, but isn't the pitch bend envelope part of the generic envelope settings for any midi clip in Live - regardless of if that midi is feeding a first or third party device? Ah I think I see what you're doing, you're looking in the universal envelopes next to the main tracks in the arrange view, right? Try double clicking on your midi clip to show it at the bottom of your screen, then click the little "e" circle button towards the bottom left to show the relative envelopes for that individual clip. You should then see some more options for the envelopes listed, including the pitch bend for that individual clip.

Ahh I think that might be it, so we'll see when I get home if it works. Thanks a lot and kickass music by the way.Cezband wrote:Ah I think I see what you're doing, you're looking in the universal envelopes next to the main tracks in the arrange view, right? Yeah, Live definitely has pitch envelopes on every MIDI clip, native or third-party alike.
