Re: Space Is The Place
Is it possible that you write theese articles about mastering and mixing in parallel to your own learning process?
so as soon you learn something you write it down and share your new wisdom with the crowd?
Thats a pretty nice attitude.
you should try mono reverbs for the sense of depth..its a false info that reverbs allways have to be stereo..the sense of depth is rather a mono thing at least thats the natural way..and therfor stereo reverbs usually are not good in creating depth..
try it..you will see..
and dont forget to filter acotrdingly.. more far away..is darker..closer is brighter.. just like in the nature..
we actually fool our brain with the aid of reverb generators.. but the mix engineer has to use them wright to make the illusion perfect..
as you say in your article..just using the sends and put some reverb on evrything doesnt do the job..
Happy learning

It's not something that happens right when I learn something, but it definitely forces me to try and understand what it is I'm doing, and why. As well as thinking of how I can explain that to other people so they can understand me.3phase wrote:Is it possible that you write theese articles about mastering and mixing in parallel to your own learning process?

When I'm working on music, either my own, or for other people, I really don't put much thought into it to be honest. It's mainly a process of reacting to what I think the music needs on a more basic level, a gut feeling it you will. Often it's not until later that I get the chance to realize what I did, and why it worked (or didn't).
Really though, I just like helping people out and the interaction it brings about. When I was starting, no one I knew wrote music too, and I wasn't really using anything like the internet either. I remember how frustrated I'd get at times trying to learn all this stuff, so this is my way of trying to help other people avoid that if I can. And like I said, the interaction is nice too. By default I'm in my studio almost all the time, so it's nice to have some meaningful way to try and have a discussion with other human beings.

Re: Space Is The Place
Thanks so much for this article, Tarekith. You are a blessing to the music production world.
I was just wondering about what someone said above about putting reverb in mono, and anything for that matter... I'm confused as to why that's a good thing to do. Isn't it all being output into stereo anyway? Is it important for panning to have things in mono instead of stereo?

Sometimes it is useful to leave some space for other instruments on both stereo sides. so you can place an utility and narrow the width to 20, 30% or even 0 for being completely mono.
I often do this with percussion sounds in the back to give some sense of depth. Usually 2 or up to 4 mainsnares dry and something with live´s own reverb in the back.
It doesn´t have to be a dense reverb just a small amount.
Some hp-filtering too because I want the punch of the mainsnares to come through. It does work pretty well. As always, it comes down to taste and individual approaches.
But there is definetly a use for mono reverbs.

That's definitely something I'll think about in my mixes from now on.
