Serato Scratch, Bridge, Ableton Suite, Turntables
Serato Scratch, Bridge, Ableton Suite, Turntables
Hello everybody,
I have some questions regarding adding turntables to my setup and maybe you guys have answers. I've been using Ableton for a few years now and so far my setup, excluding soundcards etc, includes my laptop and an APC40. (Also an additional laptop for video but that's unrelated)
I'm wanting to add turntables to my setup and I don't know a thing about that world. I've been reading a bit and I'm thinking that using Serato with the Bridge is my best bet. I'm looking at the Rane Sixty-Eight mixer but I'm not sure what type of decks to look at. I'm wanting to be able to spin/scratch/mix samples from Ableton along with having Ableton do it's thing in the background.
My question is... what do I need to look for in a turntable? I'm confused on how a turntable can effect audio samples in Ableton if the whole point of a table is to produce audio itself.
If I need to clarify anything, just let me know.
Thanks!

regarding turntables, it's a no brainer to get some technics 1200's or 1210's.. it's still the standard.. if you want to get creative, maybe vestax with some of the midi functions but you can't go wrong with some 1200's.. go to craigslist and you should be able to find a decent pair for about $400 to 500.. turntables don't really affect audio samples.. i guess if your using vinyl, the pitch control of course is gonna affect what your playing.. and i guess the quality of your needles.. if you use serato CV, then you have key lock so riding the faders on the tables won't affect it much.. maybe i don't get your questions.. anyways, Rane 68 is a beast and if you want to look at who's integrating ableton and serato very well, you have to check out DJ Enferno.. there are lot's of vids out there.. check out his Live Remix Project..

Hey thanks for the quick reply.
So it's not possible to have tables that effect audio clips in Ableton? Example being this: have a short acapella clip in ableton and use one table to scratch on that.
I've been looking up all of Enferno's stuff as he's a great teacher just from watching him do his thing.
I guess I just want to use the tables to scratch and spin clips from Ableton while Ableton is doing some backing beats and stuff that I'm controlling with my APC40. I'm probably making it out to be more complicated than it is. Maybe my laptop (Ableton scenes controlled by the APC) + the Sixty-Eight + two decks is what I'm after.
Also... I'm gonna want those awesome little Novation Dicers. Really cool.

One last thought- I'm confused how the following works:
I'm seeing people scratching vinyls but the records are labeled Serato Scratch and I'm hearing clips being scratched from Ableton. That's what tells me this is possible. I'm just confused how to configure this.
Thanks again

oh.. sorry i misunderstood your question.. AFAIK, you still can't scratch clips with the Bridge (meaning ableton's playback engine only works forward, so no sound during pullback of the CV) when i heard that, i didn't even bother installing/trying out the Bridge even though it's free for me cuz i already have serato and ableton.. but i am more coming from a turntablist point of view.. from a mixing point of view, i guess the bridge is usable.. but not for me.. my dream of just using one laptop has to wait.. for now, my dj qbert/enferno wanna be set up still looks like this.. let me know how the rane 68.. u really need that many channels?

Damn, nice setup. I'd like to get the details on it.
But my confusion still remains. How does Enferno scratch short vocal samples on vinyls that appear to be stock? Are the samples coming from Serato's bank?
EDIT: I get it now. It just took a few more hours of reading/watching tutorial videos.
Correct me if I'm wrong... but The Bridge allows Ableton to be controlled INSIDE of Serato Scratch.
The vinyls produce a harsh sound that translates into the digital file specified. Then that can be spun as a vinyl. You can then sync that up with Ableton inside of Serato Scratch. D'OH!
It's basically tables on top of Ableton.
