Can I send a return track?

Post by Mattofix » Tue Apr 05, 2011 12:24 am

I want to send Return A to Return B, but all the return send knobs are greyed out. Is this possible?

It is - right-click on one of the send knobs on a return track and select to enable it (you can also enable all sends on a return track). The knobs are disabled by default to prevent feedback - though sometimes this might be desirable.

Also ... I think they are greyed out by default because you can run in to some quite impossible plugin delay calculations when a track is feeding back on itself !

So, if I am correct in remembering this: PDC gets auto-deactivated on return tracks which are set to allow feedback.

My short method of avoiding issues here : make sure any compressors in feedback chains do not have look ahead and you will generally stay clear of most trouble. Unless you are using a monstrous buffer munching cpu hog in the return channel.

depending on how crazy you're gonna get with the feedback you might wanna drop a limiter at the end of your return track...

that's pretty spot on..
PDC is turned off for feedbacking from the sends.. and also re-routing back to audio-tracks from the 'returns'..
in short .. if you don't HAVE TO send from the returns...leave them greyed and routed to the master

but I think enabling send B dial on send A is calculable... and therefore should be safe timing wise..

I'm not sure when the deactivation is triggered though. Because A->B and then B->A would be incalculable.
As would A->B , B->C, C->D, D->A

Did they include a return path checker? or did they just switch off delay calculation if you activate one return send, regardless where it is sending. IE: the easy method.

I know what my guess is ;)

..it's only for anything AFTER the return..

edit :oops... I mean.. if all the sends are 'greyed out' on B.. calculable..
if not... not...
I wonder if routing to an audio track and turning off (greying)it's sends /monitor set to off works the same way ?
it should...logically..
