Could something like this be made in Maxforlive/as a VST for exporting MIDI? That would be sweet.

uh, oh, check out stuff that has been made for the monome. There are already a couple of m4l-versions of monome devices, and there is an emulator that lets you use a launchpad instead of the monome (http://www.maxforlive.com/library/device.php?id=141).
look at plinko for example:
http://docs.monome.org/doku.php?id=app:plinkonome
or press cafe:
http://docs.monome.org/doku.php?id=app:press_cafe
they do not work exactly as the thing you linked at, but are not too different either.

This is great, only just starting out learning Max for Live but I think now you've put the idea in my head I'm going to have to try it!
Re: This thing is awesome
is something like this available outside of max for live as a plug in?
The Push / Novation Launch Pad / Novation Launch Pad Pro / Novation Launch Key
/ Launch Control XL / Machine MkII / Machine Studio / BeatStep / Livid OhmRGB / Livid Code V2 / Apc 40 MKII
no computers or synths
20 Copies of Ableton Live Lite.

Gorgeous
Re: This thing is awesome
ball sequener should do it
BallSequencer is a sequencer VSTi based around the idea of MIDI messages being generated by balls moving around inside a rectangular area. Notes are triggered whenever a ball collides with the boundary of the rectangle. You can set parameters that will control the movement of each ball, in addition to possible note and velocity values
