Throw three multiband compressors in a rack (lo, mid, high), then in each of the chains throw a regular compressor that is side chained to whatever you want. Voilla!

...to integrate that, you'd have to specify what dynamic width of frequencies go into each 3 bands.. which i think is a great idea, very complex

There is already a high, mid, and low band built into the multiband compressor. Simply 'solo' which band you want for each width and you're good to go. I do this all the time to create some crazy effects.

Just get the Vengeance plug. It's dope.

Well, going all native has its advantages! Less ram and cpu for one.
Robert Henke, and others previously posted a rack with a frequency split/crossover. It went a bit over my head back then, so I did not use it, and now it is gone. The concept is basicly: create 2 parallel chains, and macro assign the chain selector. You can now sweep between them. Put one instance of the compressor and eq on each, and set one to high frequencies and one to low.

I never got it to sound "clean" enough though. Latency artifacts or other audiable filter type effects appeared, coloring the sound too much. Then again I never realy understood how to split the signal proparly. Its more to it then just masking out frequencies with eqs.
