How do I cut up a long recording? Songmaking strategies?

Post by graaant » Thu May 12, 2011 10:43 am

I like the idea of working with clips, but the fact that clips don't track automation/instrument property changes annoys me. So say I've been recording some cool stuff into the Arrangement with a MIDI instrument, but it's one really long track of ideas. Is there any way to record parts of this into Clips? I want to preserve the instrument property changes obviously. Maybe channel the audio output into audio clips or something? But then maybe I wouldn't be able to change instrument properties afterwards... :S

Or maybe I'm going about this wrong... Maybe there's a way to just cut that track up into sections in Arrangement view so that I'm able to loop certain parts of it and work with those loops without losing all my ideas I just recorded? Tempo scares me with either of these ideas -- sometimes I was following the metronome in this recording, but other parts are a different tempo that I want preserved.

Any video tutorial links would be AWESOME!
