Using Looper and recording a master track???

I've been playing around with the looper effect, and I decided to try record an improvisation but ran into trouble right away. I armed the master record but It does not start until you are finished recording the loop, and then since the track is armed for recording it does not record the loop you just made. It has been really cool creating multiple tracks and doing an improv live set, but how in the world can you actually record the live set?
