Beginning to perform Live...live

Post by NickyD86 » Mon May 30, 2011 12:19 pm

Hey everyone, massive noob here, I'm messing around with Live and I love it and have begun to build some sets with performance in mind - part of a live band (maybe bass, piano, guitar and a drummer at times) - I was wondering what kind of kit would anyone reccomend for this. I have a key board (Juno di) that I can switch to midi mode and control some ableton synths from but I'm also thinking about getting a launchpad. Does this sound like a sensible idea or would I better consolidating my unit into maybe picking a keyboard with a sampling section built in like the Akai MPK 49??
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers
Nick

It's hard to say what the right setup is for you without knowing much about your music or how you plan to have your Live set configured and what your needs are for live playing.

I think it's safe to say you'll want something with a button grid on it for triggering clips. Launchpad or APC* either way works there.

If you need to do lots of live keyboard playing then a keyboard controller + launchpad is a good option. But if you're not planning to play stuff live on a keyboard an APC40 might be a better option.

My setup is an APC40 to control ableton live and effects combine with an http://www.akaipro.com/lpk25 to play leads and stuff live. I ALSO have a launchpad but the only thing i really use it for is a step sequencer.

I would also recommend you look at Touchable if you own an iPad. If you already own the iPad then Touchable does some nifty things and then you wouldn't need the APC40 or the Launchad really. for under $100 dollars.

There are too many variables to give you much better advice. Sorry.

Btw, you may enjoy this series as you start preparing to play out: http://www.synnack.com/blog/post/13/lap ... ips-part-1

Great, thanks for the in-depth response. This is helpful (despite me giving you little to go on).
