Huge bass lines?

Post by Gaetano CAPUANO » Wed Jun 08, 2011 5:58 pm

Ok, so I am very new to the producing aspect of things, I am a guitar/bass player. I know some hip hop basslines like, regulators, most Jay-Z stuff etc is a real bass guitar, not to crazy, just normal bass guitar tone. But the other bass tones, the kind that really rattle the rear view mirror. really pushes some air!
Are those maybe with a bass guitar? If so how? If not please explain a bit on it, thanks.

Oh and if it is a bass guitar with some kind of effects on it please explain those if you can.

Thanks guys.

you are talking about subbass

which are mostly sine wavs. loud mono sine waves

created with synths!

or you talking about that 808 kickdrum?

Thats the thing, I dont know? I am going to check out both options.

So no bass guitar is used in the making of I guess?

Traditional music, say guitars, bass, vocals etc, more old school usually has a bass guitar involved. But these songs that have the chest kicking bass lines, do that have no bass guitar at all?

Thanks for the feedback

have access to a line6 pod x3 or x3live? try the 'line 6 sub dub' bass amp model :) it lets you get some of those really deep basslines with a standard bass guitar.

but usually, they are probably synth patches and/or 808 kicks.

im pretty sure the "chest pounding" bass you are referring to isn't from a bass guitar lol.

you are talking about the trunk rattling bass. they had a term for that where im from
its called miami bass.

"Another sub-genre of Miami bass is car audio bass, which features an even more stripped down and bass heavy sound, tending to focus on either extremely hard 909 kicks combined with sine waves or the classic 808 kick, or sometimes simply the sine wave by itself Some artist examples would be Afro-Rican (as Power Supply), Techmaster P.E.B. and Bass 305."

taken from "miami bass" wiki page.

definitely check out sine waves. the 808 is more or less a sine wave with a pitch envelope to give it that beeyow dropping quality.55 hz is pretty good as well. you could probably get there with a bass guitar, serious compression and eqing... but I dunno how clean it would sound.

Yeah, you can get there with a bass guitar. Preferably a 5 string to get them low notes and a real badass amp/cab with a nice eq. No problem, full on body rattlin bass if set up well, but its quite some kit to have.
