I think the notion of a "Mad Professor" is a pretty standard thing, ever since the classic horror films of the 50s and 60s and even before that (when was Frankenstein written? 1910 or something?). I've heard it used as a simile for pretty much anything that combines or messes with things in a strange way (chefs, painters, engineers etc - "That guy's some sort of mad professor!"). No doubt that's where the artist took his name from, and I would think that the guy who made the pedal had the same thing in mind.
