MIDI Network stability issues

Post by roembach » Thu Jun 16, 2011 12:53 am

So... I am playing in a live improv electronic duo, and have been having some issues with the MIDI network between our 2 computers and an ipad running multiple apps.

the setup:
my computer: runs an ad-hoc network, griid connector, and ableton live sending the master midi tempo signal

my Ipad: runs through the midi network session on my computer for the MIDITouch App, runs Cliip and Griid through the griid connector on my computer, and nlog synth as a midi keyboard through the midi session

mikes computer: runs slave to my midi signal, connecting to the midi network session started on my computer.

The Issues:

sometimes when connecting the ipad [either initially or because of an app crash mid set :( ] it will kick mikes computer out of the midi session therefore losing midi sync

sometimes when i put a heavy load on my CPU and RAM my computer glitches for a second and the midi sync becomes phased [the bpm still lines up but my 1.1 will be his 2.1 or 3.2 or some other random spot where it picks back up again]

I am thinking that using a wireless router instead of a mac to mac network will help with stability, but really i dont know what else to do at this point. we have been playing for like 6 months and this is a persisting problem PLEASE HELP!!!
