Stack overflows by iterations with uzi or counter - Tipps?

I´ve heard its been not my fault since max has a serious issue managing timing for greater iteration processes (while great doesn´t truly mean great, you can provoke trouble with a three digit counter). From usual programming background I remember producing stack overflows only by logical fault, e.g. infinite loops.

Since I have no experience in using pattr or table (instead of coll which I take for anything), would using one of those reduce the conflicts?

How do you work around it? Anything else but using a 5ms delay before continue/bang? Cause if you´d had 1000 steps iteration a delay would be total crap.

it is very hard to say without specific example. i guess that is one of the problems.

sounds like 'deferlow' is your friend. never use 'delay' in iteration processes. uzi is fantastic because of the 'bang when done' feature. i often find my uzi's with a deferlow after this.

fwiw, it is m4l that seems to struggle sometimes with these things. max alone is much more stable / as expected.

hm i tried deferlow, seems like depending much of the complexity of the (whole) patch. its like i´d take a 200-300ms delay :lol:


and yes, i´m talking about m4l. sorry for mixing this up. my favorite feature on uzi is pause/release. but it´s too rapid without delay nevertheless. not just in the subpatcher example here, i always encounter this problem and even more if using counter in a recursive way. its like max checking up for such straight fast lanes when compiling and gives the error to prevent timing issues (for the case you run multiple max patches inside live, max4live probably can´t control some lower level stuff compared to pure max).


in the picture is a delay before random which you´d find obsolete, since there is a trigger. but it isn´t, the 3rd trigger (bang) always comes to early without though there ain´t much happening on the right where the random range set comes from. without the delay it always takes the value of the step before.


m4l is full with such timing controversy, some weeks ago when starting it´s been really frustrating til i accepted that i´d have to trigger nearly anything. meanwhile i´m prepared somehow but it still doesn´t feel like it should, especially for those iteration things.

select everything in your patch that you can see and want to send, then go to edit menu and choose "Copy Compressed". then paste here.

recursive problems are always interesting, i cannot get everything from the pic.

NO idea if i could be remotely helpful yet of course!

and sure you were helpful. deferlow can be very useful in many cases and i never noticed that object before :oops:



i updated a few little things and, though not knowing how, the delay before the random became as obselete as it should have been.


maybe for getting quicker into it, its a randomizer for a grid matrix of 10 x 32 steps (for sending to matrixctrl, which receives a "x y value" 3-pack). the random is "relative random", depending on the step number (what the gate is for). step 1, 9, 17 etc. have much a higher probability than other and especially than even steps. the global probability for setting a step is defined with the "IF <" -condition.

and it works additive, means setting no zeros. just adding new steps with each click/bang.
