loop device for djing

Post by f.pollety » Sun Jun 19, 2011 1:03 pm

hello everybody!

I produce music with ableton live since about 2 years. before a few months i started to dj with it. I own max for live but i don't how to use it. I really don't know how to get a beginnig of working with it.
But now i want to build a max device for my dj setup. my idea is building a device, where i can push a button and get a start point of a loop, which is quantized to the beginning of the next bar. pushing the button again creates a stop point of the loop, again quantized to the beginning of the next bar. pushing the button again deletes the loop.
could anybody tell me how to do this or even tell me how i can get that far into max for live that i can do it by my own?
that would be really great, many thanks to everybody who might help me!

Fabian

What controller are you using?

All you need is in the live object model, if you want one button to do all this you'll need to work through some logic for the three states you've described remembering first to check the current state of the clip thats been launched....

I'm using an UC-33 from M-Audio. But thats not the point. It would be ok for me to push a button of my laptop-keyboard. could you detailed describe what i've got to do? it would be very helpful for me!

With all due respect, what your asking for is a few days of work... I suggest you jump in and get your feet wet in learning the live object model...

You'll need to get the id of the currently playing clip on a track and then observe its playing position, i'd divide it by four and multiply it by the same then add 4 to give you the effect of having a loop point that will be set upon the first press....

Look into the sel object as you'll need three different bangs output depending on the action you want to create....

There are a number of devices on max4live.com that can give an insight into how to set loops, they were all created with earlier versions of Max and Live so use them as a starting point in building your own...

So you're looking for some sort of single-button automatic clip control.

1st press: begin grab
2nd press: stop grabbing and play/loop the grabbed segment
3rd press: delete segment (and wait for next press to begin grabbing)

Ok. That is fine. Next question:

Which clip should it control? I would suggest having it grab clips within the current channel.
What kind of hardware controller do you have? Could you provide images?
Does it send notes? or CC's? or...?

A problem well-defined is a problem well-solved.

hey!

yes, that's quite exactly how it should work.

for making the situation a little simpler i'm gonna explain my dj setup:

I've got 4 virtual decks. every deck is one track in my set. i take every track i want to play from the browser and delete it if it is stopped. so there are never more than four clips just in the first scene of my set. i have four buttons on my laptop keyboard to start these four clips and four buttons to stop them. So I want to take this device I want to create and put it on every track of my set and in the end I want to have four buttons for to set the loops.

I use an M-Audio UC33e but just to control eqs and volume. So my controler has absolutely nothing to do with this device.

By the way, if you want to listen to one of my dj-sets, visit http://soundcloud.com/f_pollety

Thank you very much for your help!

So it only has to affect the FIRST scene of the track rather than act upon multiple tracks.
Each patcher affects only the track that it's in.
As for telling the patcher to rec/play/delete, you're using one of the "A,W,S,E,D,F,T,G,Y,H,U,J,K,O,L,P,;" keys on the virtual keyboard. I suppose a MIDI LEARN button is in order.

This seems easy enough. I am kind of swamped with one of my projects but might find the time soon.

Hey!

First I want to admit, that i'm from germany, so my english might be horrible sometimes. I'm sorry for this.

yes, exactly, I'm using the keys/buttons (however) of my laptop with the letters on it.
but i don't want to record the content of the clips. i want the device to set the start and end point of the regular clip loop engine. if i would record it, the track would go on playing and if i stop the repetition the song is at a very else position.
And the device should just work for one clip in one slot, in the end always for the same slot. so my idea is to have 4 of these devices in the end.

by the way, where do you come from? i want to learn programming max myself. if you live in berlin maybe you can show me something.

I could probably show you via Tinychat or mikogo - I have a good screen sharing setup, but we might have something of a language barrier because my German is probably worse than your English! :D

If you click below, and have a look at the Modul4r devices, in particular one called Liqu1d, you may well find your solution....

It works on the prciple of setting defined loop lengths that can then be manipulated, but it's a good starting point and may complement your work flow...

It will also perform an automatic follow action at clip end or clip stop allowing you to still split whole songs into clips and loop on the fly....

Omni Loopers very good, maybe just what you need....

Otherwise it's the paypal buttons on the right hand side of the screen....
