Synapse for Kinect: Easily control Live with Kinect
Synapse for Kinect: Easily control Live with Kinect
Hey guys, I made an application and a series of M4L patches that allow you to map joint positions and hit events (like punching in a directon) to controls in Live. It's super easy to use and install, and it's free. It also allows you to get the depth map and joint data into Quartz Composer and Jitter so you can make some crazy visuals to accompany your sets, then put on an awesome live show with it.
Check out my YouTube video explaining it:

And here's the site to get it from:

I'm brand new to Live, and have zero musical talent, so my demo is only scratching the surface of what you could create. But I know that you guys are Live pros here, so I bet you can use these tools to make some stuff that will really blow some minds. Enjoy!

holy sh*t dude that is awesome.
Re: Easily control Live with Kinect
Yep, colour me impressed.
This is the strongest case I've seen for getting Kinect or M4L. The idea of some guy in a robot outfit manipulating parameters to the music live on stage with his dance moves...welcome to "oh shit this is actually the future we're living in right now."
Something like this, a team-up of a body-popper and a producer suddenly becomes pretty fearsome.

I already answered for you on YouTube, justchris86, but for anyone else wondering, yep, you just have to plug the Kinect into your computer's USB port. No Xbox required.

Re: Easily control Live with Kinect
Yeah, that's what I was hoping for since I saw the first Kinect hacks...
Just installed it... it works perfectly!
One thing I haven't found out yet: can you set ranges for mapped parameters in your kinect max devices according to their unit somehow (f.ex. synced LFO / BPM / LFO free rate and stuff)?
Thanks for your great work!

Nah, I wasn't able to let you set ranges in the target's unit, you have to just do it with a plain number. It is pretty to figure out how the number maps to the target, though. For example, I wanted to keep my synced LFO between 1/16 and 1/4. I tried different ranges and dragged the control around to see how the mapping worked, and quickly found that 1/16 is "4.00" and 1/4 is "9.00", so those were my min and max in the Max Kinect Dial. It ain't perfect, but it's not a huge pain in the ass, either.#1thelark wrote:Yeah, that's what I was hoping for since I saw the first Kinect hacks...

Thank you Awwbees, I have just watched your full patch explanation video and I'm in awe of what you have achieved. I can't wait until I can setup my kinect and download your amazing Synapse tools. I think you deserve a place within the Ableton team with your skills, and you will probably boost M4L sales as your ideas spread. Good luck with your development and thanks again.
