ahhhh the feel of buying an ibook one month ago and now apple releases the new ibooks and tibooks, dropping the price of mine to $999. it's kinda sad...
but seriously, the new apple laptops look to be very promising... check them out.

hey tj - i seem to bump into you in alot of forums - what's your performance opinion on the iBook? If you pick one up, what do you anticpate doing with it?
i'm finally going to try and do some live work, at an open laptop performance on the LES, and am thinking this would be a good live/portable solution to add on to my desktop at home.

First of all I don't know anything of Apple performances vs. PC counterparts (beside what I learnt on this site) but how would this 999$ 700 mhz Ibook with eg. 256 MB (or the slightly more expensive one) RAM stack up against my current 2 yr. old Athlon 1Ghz with 256 MB Ram for audio production , that is ?
I'd like to use it exclusively for Live live performance ....

howdy. well today is a good day to ask since this cat i work with just showed up with a shiny new one he purchased this morning from the Apple SoHo store here in NYC. my opinion is that this thing is the BOMB. it flies and it kicks my G4 Titanium's ass all over the place. the fact that is has a 32mb graphics card is dope, and an 800mhz G3 is an amazing chip. i think iBook is the clear choice for Live because a.) Live is not AltiVec aware so a G4 is just a waste of money, b.) it's WAY more durable and portable which is perfect for gigging, c.) it's an awesome buy and looks cool too. that's my opinion. if i get one i'll probably only use it to do live performances with Ableton Live. in the studio i use Logic so i need a G4 there. hope that helps. ciao.mikeweeks wrote:hey tj - i seem to bump into you in alot of forums - what's your performance opinion on the iBook? i'm a pc user so i don't know how apple does its do.
There's a rumor that there will be a new Motorola chip in January, but the real excitement is for the IBM 970 coming out mid to end next year. But neither of these chips will likely be in laptops in 2003, I think most would agree. These new books should be pretty solid for a while.
Heres the benchmark results:
Make of computer: Macintosh TIbook 867
Operating system: os 9.2
CPU Speed: 867
Soundcard: Internal
RAM: 512 mb
Result for test 1: 4%
Result for test 2: 27%
I'm happy!
This laptop is smoking! not literally, but I haven't had any performance issues as of yet.....
rewire works very well:
the test I did was set up like this:
Ableton demo song
1 additional channel for rewire in -
Industiral insect in demo reason directory (12 instruments including 2 maelstroms + 1 nnxt, plus 13 effects units)
with heaviest loaded scene in the live demo - plus recording in on the reason track -
Performance : rewired without playing:11%
Rewired with the scene going, and the most busy part of the reason track:
47%
I have no other laptop rewire experience, does this blow away any other similar tests?
I can't complain about a thing with this laptop - well worth every penny

Hi Mbazzy -- they should be pretty equivalent, maybe the Athlon is a bit faster. In general those iBooks are really nice machines (we have a bunch at work), built like tanks and are very reliable.Mbazzy wrote:First of all I don't know anything of Apple performances vs.
