Akai MPD18 mapping like crazy on a drum rack.

Post by Khorde » Wed Jul 13, 2011 2:58 pm

O'hoy,

From what I've gathered, this isn't a very widespread issue and I've googled my badassles off trying to find an answer. Basically, I plug in the MPD18, load a kit from ze drum rack, and then I expect the 4X4 grid that is marked in the drum kit in the bottom panel to seamlessly map to the pads of the MPD18. Alas, it does not. It maps the pads completely off and some are even mapped outside of the marked grid. And from all the talk the drum rack and the MPD18 should play well together, basically plug n play, right?

Have I missed something? I've tried changing settings within the MPD18 Editor but to no avail and playing around with MIDI settings in Live (also no success).

This is Ableton Live 8.2.2 Suite from the ableton.com website (got it this week), not activated/authorized/whatever-it-is-called version. I'm running it under Mac OS X 10.6.

Please my peeps, help a soul out and be gentle if the character of this question is of a novice-like nature. I've tried to look up the answer on my own but failed.

I had this problem too, and it was caused by Ableton treating the MPD18 as a MIDI "keyboard" (I don't know the technical term, but I mean a device whose messages Ableton interprets as Notes played) rather than a native control surface. So basically, ensure that you have the correct port selected in MIDI Preferences, and that you've set that port to the MPD18.

You, sir/ma'am, deserve to make babies. Thank you! I feel a tad stupid now, having tried out many presets but missed the correct one, but relieved. Changed the preset in MPD18 to the Chromatic one and we were good to go!
