Advanced Bass Techniques

Hello friends,
I had an inquiry on what kind of techniques you guys recommend for advanced bass and rhythm techniques present in genres like glitch, dub, electro, etc... To me it sounds like A LOT of automation on the arpeggiator's settings on the channel and obviously the settings on the synth itself. Because it seems that whether you are physically playing the notes or drawing them in, the notes still sound too pronounced and are not as fluid like an arpeggiator. But the arp can be very repetitive so what are some of your suggestions on creating complex bass lines? Thanks in advance.
