Recording an external synth

Post by TriSect » Thu Aug 18, 2011 5:33 am

Currently I have my Axiom Pro 49 connected to my access virus synth(desktop module classic) which is then connected to my Traktor Kontrol S4 which is routed into my MacBook Pro. When I open an audio track and configure it properly I can get the sound off my synth and into Ableton. The issue is that when I go to record myself playing, Ableton all of a sudden freezes up and stops working. Any suggestions??

The setup within the audio clip is
Audio from:
-Ext. In
-3/4

Monitor
-Auto

Audio to
-Master
-(Blank)

is there a setting I need to change in order to stop the freezing??

I don't know about the freezing but just a thought about making the setup simpler.

Have you tried...
- connecting the Axiom Pro 49 with USB to the computer instead of connecting it directly to the Virus synth
- plugging the MIDI OUT of the Traktor Kontrol S4 to the MIDI IN of the Virus Classic
- connecting the Audio OUT of the Virus to inputs 1/2 or 3/4 of the traktor Kontrol S4 (you seem to be doing that already)

So. This would mean that you could make a new MIDI track in Live and drag in an External Instrument device from the Browser into that track.
Set the MIDI OUT to Traktor Kontrol S4 (or whatever it shows up as in OSX)
Set Audio From to Traktor Kontrol 1/2 or 3/4 (depending on what you have the Virus plugged into).

Now when you arm that track and and press keys on the Axiom it will send midi through the Traktor Kontrol to the Virus and send it's audio right back into the same track.

Here's a better explanation.
