Sick of hearing about M4L
Hey all,
Is it just me or is anyone else here sick to death of max for live being the default answer to any genuine question on these forums?
If anyone wants to do anything interesting in live, some fracking M4L guy decides to tell us all that the way to do this is to learn a new language.
It'd be like is a person asked if there was an english word for "expecting things to work out well and for the best" and instead of just answering "optimism", the person insisted on telling you you'd need to learn mandarin in order to properly express yourself.
Maybe in this forum we should stick to live and keep the m4l forum for all of this m4l crap.
I'm just sick of the arrogance of max.

someone needs a hug.
can you post examples? I've only seen that line used when the answer is "no you can't do that" then someone blue skies up a m4L widget. prior to m4L it was bomes midi translator used as the do-it-all widget for geeks.

I should make a max patch that allows me to browse the forums here.

Re: Sick of hearing about M4L
Jokes aside, I don't think it's a bad thing when someone tells you about a M4L solution. Obviously you want a regular Live way if it exists, but I appreciate knowing if it can be solved with M4L. Well, if someone's already done the hard work at least. If enough things I want already have M4L devices, I might get it. But I don't think I'd want to do more than a bit of tweaking or bastardising devices. Programing isn't for everyone.
Can be annoying if used as an answer to a feature request, but even then if it's something the poster really needs to do they might be interested it's useful to know if such a device exists.
I get the OP's point though. And it's not bitching about M4L.

Re: Sick of hearing about M4L
To me it seems Max is no more programming than building a Live set. You take some devices/objects connect them up to do something you want. For most people the "programming" happens behind the scenes, just as it does in Live.
Knowing that you can make a dummy clip is no different than knowing how to make an m4l device.
Granted, some devices are very complex and well made, most of them are built by people who are still new to max due to m4l's release.
I applaud Ableton for going out on a limb and giving people the option to do things with Live that the guys at Ableton didn't think of yet. And I will go out on a limb and bet that the next release of Live will probably take a bunch of ideas generated by the people the OP is sick of hearing from, and incorporate those into new and better functioning bells and wistles that do not need m4l to operate.
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Live a descendant of Max patching?
However, it would be nice if Live would just do what I want it too, whatever that is, and whenever I need it too.

There was some early prototyping done with Max/MSP, but Live is coded from the ground up since the beginning.JuanSOLO wrote:Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Live a descendant of Max patching?

Re: Sick of hearing about M4L
I've had max for live for a quite awhile now and to be honest i,m not even vaguely interested in working programming it - i have not got the attention span to facilitate it. To me sitting down programming that thing has got ** all to do with music and life is far to interesting to waist sitting tapping away on that shite.
In saying all that i do realise how valuable a tool it is that why i bought it.

Max For Live is one of the best best best things ever and David Zicarelli is the man
These are the collaborations every musician expects, making Ableton the great company it is and Live the best musical software ever.

if you get an itch for it, run your TV through it while you chill out after work.jamief wrote:I've had max for live for a quite awhile now and to be honest i,m not even vaguely interested in working programming it - i have not got the attention span to facilitate it. sometimes I use the term music, sometimes I use the term audio, there's a difference.

I get your point. But it wouldn't hurt to grow a little thicker skin.socialjusticeman wrote:If anyone wants to do anything interesting in live, some fracking M4L guy decides to tell us all that the way to do this is to learn a new language.
Instead of waiting until the next update or major version we can roll our solutions for a lot of things. IMO, that's better than hearing, "Umm, no, you can't do that in Live". And, IMO, having Max available for Live is like having VBA available for Excel. It just extends an already capable app.
Re: Sick of hearing about M4L
To OP,
M4L ROCKS!
Like Jamief, I will probably never get into the programming side of m4l, but as a user, it is the best investment I have made since getting Live.
Oh, sorry. You are sick of people banging on about M4L.
