MPK 49 controls take forever to register after assignment

OK so recently got an Akai MPK49

love it so far except for one (pretty important) issue

when I map a control like say an encoder to an ableton plugin control such as a macro or knob - it takes forever for the control to take 'hold' or register

there is a light blue strip acropss the bottom of my screen which means its working

but i have to sit there twisting said encoder back and forth for a good 15 - 30 seconds before i see the knob on the screen start turning along with it

surely its not meant to take that long - when working on teh fly in the 'moment' this is so painfull that i have stopped using the MPK for controller duties sticking with the mouse

any help in making this assignment happen quicker?

I have a similar issue with my BCR2000, but nowhere near as severe. It may take a second or two which is pretty annoying, but not disastrous. I have never bothered posting as it is manageable, but I would also be interested to see the responses.
