I have 2 maudio audiophile cards, so thats 2 sets of stereo ins and outs.
How do I go about using external effects without a mixer?

Well, it's not gonna be the most elegant solution ever, but it'll work.
one of your audio file cards will be your master out.
the other will be FX send and return.
if you wanna go with two mono sends, do it like this:
Make a return track that is dedicated just to sending audio to your FX unit.
set the output of the return track to the output of your 2nd audio card.
connect that output to your fx unit.
connect the output of your FX unit to the inputs of the 2nd audio card.
now make an audio track in live and make it's input the 2nd audio card.
make sure you engage monitor on for that track.
there ya go.
