Clip Cutoff Issue

Post by benirose » Tue Sep 27, 2011 3:57 pm

Hey guys, sorry to bug you with this one, but I'm playing a show this Friday and I'm having some problems getting Ableton to function the way I want it to. I'm playing some droney noise stuff, and I'm having two problems with my clips. Both problems revolve around how a freshly recorded clip plays back.

A general task I need to perform is to hold down a chord or note, and then record a 1 bar clip of that chord. However, I'm getting some issues, the main problem being that if I hold down the chord for even a split second after the clip stops recording and starts playing back, when I let go of the chord, the chord stops playing until the clip loops around again. I need it to be seamless, I play and hold a chord, I press a button on my launchpad, I press it again, and I can let go of the chord without any interruption. Is this possible? I imagine this is happening because my physical playing is overriding the MIDI info, and by the time I let go of it, it's already passed the NOTE ON message and doesn't get it again till it loops. Is there a way to either disable my physical playing when a clip is playing back or have it pick up on the NOTE ON message even after it's happened?

And speaking of interruptions, the other problem is a bit more minor, but still pretty annoying. For some reason when I record a 1 bar clip of me holding down a chord, even if I continue to hold it down after it starts playback, the MIDI notes are cut off just short of being a complete bar. When I turn record quantization off, it seems to do it less, but still do it. It's easy for me to just drag the notes out even while playing live, but it's still a pain, so I'm wondering if I can fix this.

Anyways, any help you can send my way would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

I'm not positive if this would help, but have you tried holding a sustain pedal, and just tapping the chord? In theory, the held sustain pedal should record all the way through (unless Live is waiting for it to change first, in which case, if it is held the entire time, live might not record any change/movement)

Another option which is a bit more rough, might be assigning clip Loop settings.. Fun in some cases, but I really don't think it would apply here. Just throwing that out there haha

I don't have a controller I use live that has a pedal option. It's pretty annoying, I don't understand why the notes cut off just right before extending to the end. I can live with it though, but I can imagine there are people who can't and have voiced opinions or figured out a work around.
