Follow actions not saved

Post by robbmasters » Tue Feb 22, 2005 2:30 am

When I use the "Save Default Clip" button, and then reload my clip, Live seems to remember everything apart from any follow actions that have been defined.

I can't find anything that explicitly says that follow actions should be saved, nor anything that says that they shouldn't. Therefore, I can't be sure whether:

a) this is a bug
b) this is how Ableton think it should be
c) I'm doing something wrong...

Whichever it is it seems to me that the follow actions ought to be saved with the default clip. The manual states that "The Save Default Clip button saves the current clip’s settings with the sample" and these are clearly some of the current clip's settings. Everything else in the clip box gets saved, so it seems reasonable that these should too. Oh and it's vital for what I'm trying to do...

I'm breaking songs down into loops with follow actions to move from one loop to another. The loops are numbered so that they appear in the correct order when I drag them from the file browser into the Session view. Ultimately I will have 100s of songs, and I won't know what I want to use in advance, so I can't simply put them all in a big Live set. Therefore, I need the follow actions to be saved with the clips so that the realtionships between them are preserved when I "load a song" (i.e drag all its clips into the Session view).

Hopefully it's "c" and somone can help me out. Or "a" and Ableton can react quickly. If it's "b" I may have to abandon Live...

Hi robbmasters,

It is mostly b) but I would choose d) It is like Ableton thought it should be :)
We are going to revise this behavior but probably not until the next major release.

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the reply.

I hope you can manage to squeeze it in sooner - I was planning to use Live for a couple of up-coming gigs, but without this I don't think that that's going to work.

While I'm sure it made sense at the time () I can't see any logical reason for the current behaviour. If follow actions were saved with the default clip, but the user didn't want them to be, they could simply ensure none were set when they saved the default clip. So the user would have the choice of whether or not to save them - as they do with every other track setting. At the moment we don't have that choice. Whatever you think most users will want to do (and whatever most users actually do want to do) giving us the choice covers both scenarios.

But as you're planning on revising it, you no doubt know all this already.

However, if we can get it sooner than Live 5 (unless Live 5 is just aropund the corner) that'd be much appreciated. And if you need an early Beta tester.... ;)

Cheers,

Robb
