Total n00b in music production, period. using ableton for half a week. 8.2.6, Hp pav G6 (i3, 2.6ghz, win7 64bit, 4gb ram).
short form question : how exactly am i supposed to use IMPULSE?
long form Question : can I drop kick,snare,percussion sounds into IMPULSE like i do on the DRUM RACK or no? My impulse doesn't have any folders for kick, snare, etc but it is a drum machine, right? The tutorials and other vids i saw online pretty much all had (what seemed like) 3rd party sample sounds dropped into Impulse ... I have none (yet). So Ableton doesn't have any default sounds for Impulse that ship with the download ? Is my only choice then to get samples from outside? If not, then please elaborate or provide links to tutorial. thanks very much for your time.

You can get samples from any number of places. It is very exciting to be honest haha.
1. Anything in Live that already uses Samples, the sample slot usually has a hot-swap button. When you hit it, the folder that the file is referenced to opens in the browser. I'd take note of where that folder is.
2. There is a decent number of free packs of samples online. Possibly even on YouTube
3. (the fun way), you can go into Arrangement View and highlight any part of any audio clip, then drag it into a slot. I guess you may want to beware of illegal sampling... If you manipulate something enough, you can get away with it. A nice history lesson would be to check out the Amen Break on wiki, download that, and put those pieces into Impulse
. You can then save that Impulse for later use.
