Novation Impulse 61 problems - sustain pedal

Post by jazzmanjazzhead » Sat Oct 08, 2011 8:58 pm

Hi Ableton folks
Does anyone out there have any problems with sustain pedal working correctly with Novation Impulse 61?
I am experiencing various problems, but the main issue is with sustain pedal. If the Novation Impulse control surface is deselected in Ableton prefs, it works fine.
Any feedback would be welcome.

My current set up is:

Ableton Suite v8.2.6
Mac OS 10.6.3
Novation Impulse 61
AutoMap v4.1.8
Sustain pedal is "MGear" piano type sustain pedal.

Cheers :D

I'm having the same exact problem.

The sustain pedal seems to trigger the play scene 5 button. And the expression pedal seems to turn track 3 on and off.

Did you figure it out?

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt
I have not found a solution to this problem yet.

Novation tech support are involved and have being trying hard to resolve the problem. Novation suggested I check that the correct Mac OS version was being used, I am using 10.6.8 (based on Navations minimum spec requirement) and am still having the same problem.
Ableton tech support have not responded to my query.

I am using a M-Gear sustain pedal, but have tried other pedals and still have the same problem.
The mod wheel is also controlling fader values on send A or differnt tracks dependant on how many tracks are present in the project.

Are you using a Mac? what OS verion you are using ?
What pedal are you using?
Presume you are using Ableon 8.2.6?

Yeah I've got the exact same setup as you. OSX 10.6.8. Live 8.2.6. M Gear sustain pedal. Haven't noticed the mod wheel problem yet, but I'm sure it's there.

Could be a cool controller, but seems like there are lots of problems to fix. Hopefully, they can sort it out soon.

Have you found any way at all to edit the cc #'s on the pedals? If only we could edit the sustain or expression pedals.

Thanks!

Hi
Good to know you are on the same set up and same M-Gear pedal!
Novation tech support have been guiding me through this, and have eventually stated that the problem lies within Ableton software. They have issued bug report to Ableton. ABLETON - PLEASE SORT THIS OUT !
I guess the only thing we can do is wait for Ableton to release an new version which will fix the problem.
If you want to get round the sustain pedal problem, the only short term fix is to deselect the Novation Impulse control surface in Ableton Midi preferences, and then the sustain pedal will work normally.
To fix the mod wheel issue, go to Impulse keyboard ,press "Controls" move mod wheel and select Midi Channel 3 and save to template 4 (Ableton Live template)
To save press shift and keyboard button.

Hope this helps.

I agree the Novation Impulse keyboard has a lot of potential, I like the action of the keys, I have tried several midi keyboards before this one, and most of them have issues.
Akai MPK61 - poor key action (heavy action and irregular velocities) and drum pads you have to beat the crap out of!, can't address more than 3 banks of tracks, only 8 faders - no good for organ drawbars etc
Novation SLMk2 - my unit had a broken XY pad and Automap kept crashing my Mac.
If they can sort this out, I think it is a winner.
Haven't tried M-Audio Axiom 61 mk 2 - have you?

So from your understanding is there any way to edit CC#s of the sustain and expression pedals, or the transport controls? Can this be done through Automap somehow?

I do like the action of this keyboard, I HATE all m audio keyboards, they have the "sticky key" problem that you'll find all over message boards.

I think I'm going to end up returning this thing while I cant still get a full refund...

Hi
Can't comment on transport controls, but when I tried to manualy map sustain pedal via the Impulse keyboard it would not recognise the midi signal coming from the sustain pedal or allow us to edit CC #'s.
The only thing I can now suggest is you log teh problem with Novation and Ableton tech support.
Spoke to Ableton in Berlin this morning, they are working on a fix but could not provide an estimate of when this is likely to be resolved.

I agree with your comment about the earlier M-Audio keys, on the unit I tried they were "sticky"
I have yet to try the Axiom Mk2, understand they may have sorted the keys out?
