DJ Effects

Post by [email protected] » Mon Oct 24, 2011 5:07 pm

Hey guys,

Im creating my DJ setup in live, I have a DN MC 6000 right now but I want to get an APC40 :)

Anyways, Im just looking to get a discussion going around effects used in your sets. I feel like my Reverb doesnt really 'add' a lot to the sound to create a warm, felt, feedback. Mine sounds like a panzy reverb thats too chicken to show itself. Dont get me wrong - I understand the concept of reverb (you should barely be able to tell its there - any more,and your over-doing it) However I just feel like mines barely even there, you know? Any ideas?

Secondly Im wondering what plugins you use for delays. Ive got a simple delay on my Send, but I feel like its 'echo' isnt very characteristic of other delays Ive heard. I want to have it so that after a clip has played, I can throw up a delay to keep the last bit of vocal going for say another 2 bars or something.

Also there is an effect I really want, im sure its pretty dang standard just cant put my name on it. If your playing a clip, and just want one part of that clip to repeat itself (please dont make me sound like an idiot by saying use the beat-repeat plugin. Ive tried this, and maybe I just dont understand how to use it yet :))for a few repeats and bring it back in. Any suggestions?

I a tut-fanatic and have watched a thousand vids, but I guess Id rather point to specifics at what im looking for, rather than sifting through more videos. Thanks for aanything, this forum is a great place to get help!

Another option with reverb is to make it as a swooshy instrument that plays alongside your arrangement as an embellishment. If you eq or filter out a lot of the lows and give it some amp modulation (either via sidechaining or autopan), maybe some other effects for shine, you can have it jam along with your other sounds. In this case, you definitely want it 'heard' but out of the way of everything else. I might go for around 11 seconds of delay when using it in this manner.

With Beat Repeat, I tend to turn chance to zero, make sure that I can't hear the original audio when usin the effect, and I turn it off and on via the 'Repeat' button. When I press it, the material is stuck, indefinitely, until I impress the button.

Thank you both! Awesome racks, and awesome advice.

Tarekith - I have another question for you. Ive downloaded the racks and have read the attached PDF but Im still having difficult setting the racks up. I want to assign parts of your rack to the macro controls and then map those to knobs on my mixer (duuuuh). But, Im not sure which knobs of your FX rack to assign to macros (I love the delay FX where you can also assign the second knob to control the grid ie. 1/32 - 1/4 and being able to change those on the fly). Just wondering, should I be putting these FX within my Track Racks (on Track 1 and Track 2) or use it as a send effect? (just wondering because I tried the send, but it seemed to be affeting the audio post master, so it wouldnt shut off). And which knobs should I be assigning for your delay FX?

Thaaaaank you for everything!

These effects are designed to be use on each track, not on the sends. Most of the racks I made use the first macro control as the main control, so that's the one you want to assign to your controller.

One more question :)

My geekiness cant be surpassed. Im trying to get the hang of the loop FX. Ive tried super luper 1 and v2 and I want to engage looping and then begin decreasing the loop length. Is there any way to quantize the beginning of the loop to global tempo? That way it starts right on the downbeat like traktor would? I love how Im not able to loop, but is it just going to take practise for timing, or is there a way to quantize the start of the loop? Thanks!

Besides Beat repeat you could also be looking for a Delay (try the Audio Effects/Simple Delay/Quarter Notes for example).
You can then automate on/off and Dry/Wet or put it on a Send and automate the Track Send as well as the Track Volume on the Send to fine-tune the effect.

/edit
Furthermore you could try the following:

-Reverb and setting a very high Decay Time and tweaking the parameters

-Audio Effects->Filter Delay -> Loopo
//
