Level down all tracks despite tracks volume automation...??

Post by Earwax69 » Tue Oct 25, 2011 7:27 am

Hi!

I know I can select all my track (arrangement view) and turn down the volume of all tracks. My problem is that I have automated a lots of my tracks volume. Now my overall volume is too high and its peaking a lot in my Master limiter. I would like to lower down everything to gain back some dynamics.

??
thanks

That's why I never use the faders to automate volume.. Use the 'Utility' plug for automated volume changes, or each clip itself..

What I would do now is is, drop the Utility plugin on every track and copy your automation over to the Gain of the utility, then delete the fader volume automation..

That will get you close.. if you find you need more tweaking.. tweak from the clip itself..

Hope this helps..

Using the Utility plug is a wise idea. I have probably less than 10 tracks with volume automation, I'll take the time to copy the envellope to the Utility plug.

Thanks for the trick!

Just beware that if you need volume control down to -inf db,(zero level) utility wont get you there.

Maybe use instrument racks and use the 'chain volume' to get that extra control.

Using chain volume is a wise idea for the future.
In your case I would use Utility to reduce the levels
and let the volume automation as it is. No need to copy&paste.

Utility on each tracks? would that an utility on the master channel do exactly the same thing?

Well only if you want to reduce them all by the same amount.

Always wondered why Utility doesn't go to -INF

You can also automate the volume and panning inside the clip envelopes them selves rather than on the track. That way you still have the volume and panning controls free on the tracks for your mix.

@psyfi; yeah I do that all the time. But often the automation is on longer event.

@Chapelier Fou; Major problem in MY workflow or in Ableton general workflow?

In each song I make, there is always volume automation. I'll use the utility plug as a workaround in the future.

Consolidate you clips to the length of the event. Simples
