6/8VS4/4. Is there a problem in time signature indication ?

Post by cybercharles » Tue Oct 25, 2011 7:09 pm

Hello hello !

I often work with ternary measures.

Using Live I have a small problem
on the time indication for ternary measures in both clip or arrangement view.

My music theory can be wrong but are we ok on this point:

a 4/4 time signature is a 4 time quarter note in a measure

//: 1 2 3 4 ://

a 6/8 time signature is ternary because the quarter note is divided in 3 eighth notes (triplet) and not in 2 eighth notes and there is 2 time in a measure.

//: (123) (123) ://

If we superimpose the two measures at the same tempo:

4/4 = //: 1-------2-------3-------4 ://
6/8 = //: (1-2-3)(1-2-3) ://

A 4/4 bar measure is exactely two time longer than a 6/8 measure.

So In Live do the same: you create a Midi clip, you change the time signature to 6/8 and you create notes following time indication (1_1.2_1.3_..._1.6).
After you create a second 4/4 midi clip, create notes on quarter
Superimpose clips in arrangement view, you will observe that the theory is not respected...the 6/8 clip is equal to a 3/4 clip long ...And the metronome is false too...because the clic is on eighth notes and note on triple eighth notes...

Can someone explain me this ?

I know that you can write a good 6/8 timing clip by changing the 1/8 binary grid in the 1/8T ternary grid. But the time indication ruler stay wrong
and workin on the polyrhythmic rapidly become tiring ...

My music theory is wrong ignore my stupid post ......

a 6/8 measure is equal in time as a 3/4 measure. I mixed triplet quater note and three eighth notes....
