Strings plug in.

Post by smoulder » Thu Nov 10, 2011 9:54 pm

Does anyone know of where I could get a realistic strings plug in. The strings that come with Ableton 8, don't give the real feel of fullness I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance.

Tension is a very good instrument for strings in my opinion. It was developed in collaboration with Applied Acoustic Systems. If you want even more realistic strings, you might want to look at strings sample libraries to use with samplers like Kontact, HALion or even Ableton's Sampler.
Before you do, though, have a look at the Instrument Rack presets using Tension with other effects. That way you have amps, cabinets, flangers and delays coupled with the Tension instrument that make it sound very much like a real guitar.

like symphonic string instrument plugins? uh, how much do you want to spend?
most realistic sounds are probably going to come from multisampled library intruments.
There's a huge price/quality curve, so a ballpark figure might help.

I think Ableton's Orchestral instruments sound pretty impressive. I'm assuming the strings you're referring to "that come with Live 8" are from the EIC2 collection that's included in the boxed version. Orchestral Strings is only $189 http://www.ableton.com/orchestral-strings and would greatly expand the string sound capabilities you have via EIC2, which are mostly legato. If you compared it to similar products in the same price range, like, say, NI's Session Stings ($119) and what you could get from other companies for under 200 dollars, the sound quality of Ableton's strings wins for me. The complete orchestral instrument collection would be awesome to have.
