Slightly in suburbia and there's an owl outside my window...

Post by jbodango » Fri Nov 11, 2011 10:02 am

This guy (or gal) owl has been hooting for about 4 1/2 hours now and his (or her's) randomness and lack of cadence/rhythm/timing has become difficult for me to ignore. He or her stops long enough for me to not expect it and then startles me right as I dose off. And then every couple minutes its a non stop hooter fest.

it's no longer nature talking... it's no longer artistic... it's keeping me from sleeping.

The closest thing I can compare it to would be a dub wobble-tuba pseudo bass line that has an odd time signature (say 15/16 or 13/8) which was then warped by some asshole into a 4/4 loop. Not to wax Abletonesque-specific: one could compare it to a bad Complex Pro mode warp job with a really poor choice in formant/envelope-to-original-tempo ratio.

With that being said, would it to be a "mother-nature faux pas" for me to take my low powered pellet gun and attempt to give this asshole a few love taps? Would the owl consider them 'actual' love taps or do you think he/she would get the clue and relocate back to his/her normal area of matriculation?

I appreciate advice from y'all. I need some sleep pronto.

It's times like this that justify my belief that everyone should own a confetti cannon.

Not only would it have rid you of the avian nuisance, but you could simultaneously celebrate your success.

You sure it's not Skrillex sitting in a tree on a bender? :x

I don't use the word 'epic' lightly. With that being said, the situation has become epic.

Update 1: After spending and hour and a half revising a mere three sentences for a grant proposal, I went outside and perused the perimeter for 15 to 20 minutes. I heard the owl once or twice but couldn't pinpoint his/her location. I did discover some sort of nest near the drainage pipe of the gutter. However, it is on the opposite side of the house from where i perceived the owl hoots coming from.

update 2: The sun came up and I took a better look at the nest. I'm clueless. I failed my 'intro to bird watching' elective back in college and never got around to retaking it.

You're brillant... I would have never thought of this... however, I want to say 'more likely than not' but in all honestly I'm stuck at 'inconclusive."

Here's why.

Bear with me; this gets a little convoluted.

I dated a girl a few years back who was into watching TV. She was obsessed with Law & Order, Sex and the City, and Dog the Bounty Hunter. I don't do the TV thing much, it all fuzzes out. Anywho, I was getting couch time in with her and during a hummer there was an episode which they analyzed scat and droppings to determine a creature/predator/rapist/wobbleist they needed to apprehend.

I'm stuck now though as I have yet to find an authoritative wiki or site that describes and classifies Skrillex tracks, scat and droppings.

update 3: at 7:30 am this morning a series of pickup trucks packed with able bodied persons arrived at my abode. my work migrated their exchange server into the 'cloud' and i've been missing some calendar reminders. one of them was that the contractors were coming today to begin replacing the 30 year old shake shingles on my abode.... Conversely, you think you have it bad, owl-hater? We get owls, crows, and fucking flocks of feral parrots. Years ago they escaped from a wildlife preserve nearby, and they're the most miserable sounding creatures on earth.

I get Foxes in the city. Now there is a noisy shagger if ever there was one.

In the country house we are fortunate to have 2 owls within earshot. The female hangs out in the quarry and the male in a yew tree in the churchyard. You can tell the gender from the sound they make.

It's easier to hear than explain. Try this website if you are interested.
