Memory for iPad2
Memory for iPad2
I'm thinking of getting an iPad2 for use as a controller. What I don't know is what I need for memory. 16, 32, or 64. I don't intend on traveling so wifi is all I need. I have a large desktop system (W64) so I don't need it for anything other then music.
I've read just about every post on iPads on this and other forums. I haven't found much re memory sizing.
What do the different memory sizes offer?

Re: Memory for iPad2
It's the size of the hard drive, not any kind of RAM.
If you watch lots of movies, or need thousands of songs at your disposal, go big.
If you want to use it as a controller/music making device, go small.
If you want something in between... You know what to do.

I love my I pad ; ) go with 32 that way you can loud lots of apps. It is amazing as a controller.
Re: Memory for iPad2
Seems like the 32 will give me the most bang for the buck. Thanks for the replies.
Re: Memory for iPad2
If you are not going to be storing a lot of MP3s or Movies on the iPad and only going to be using it as a controller for Ableton and other music apps on the ipad then the 16gb should suffice - that's what my ipad1 is and that's how I use it.
If you want to use your iPad for watching movies and storing loads of music - i.e if you are going to be Djing witth it then the 32 or 64 are the better options.

Re: Memory for iPad2
I got the 16gb and still haven't filled up.
I find that there's really only a certain amount of apps that are applicable to anyone, and although you would want to try out a lot of apps, there's really only a select few that you would want to keep and make use of and the rest just get deleted.
I can't recall where I read it, but I've read somewhere that the more memory you have on an iPod the more space you have the higher chance of it crashing and you lose the data. I'm not sure if that applies to the iPad2 also though.

I believe that's the same for most hard drives.oculairus wrote:I got the 16gb and still haven't filled up.

If you have them packed to the brim then the less stable they become.

Re: Memory for iPad2
Get the 16GB if you're not putting music/movies on it.
Re: Memory for iPad2
I have the 16GB and it's been fine for my uses. A decent selection of music apps, a couple movies, a bunch of MP3's, all my photos, and I still have a couple GB free too.

Re: Memory for iPad2
I have lousy vision. For that reason, I prefer to watch movies on my 25" monitor or 32" TV. As far as music, I don't collect any. If anything, I'd like to capture clips from video, edit them down as sample sources and store them off in some corner.
I've looked at a lot of apps on the appstore and couldn't find any must-haves outside of music apps. I like that fact that a lot of you are happy with 16g. That extra $100 will pay for the apps and any connection devices I may need.
One thing I don't understand about the ipad is moving data between my desktop and the ipad and its use as a controller. If I capture a sample either on the ipad or desktop can I move it back and forth between ipad apps and the desktop or is this a matter determined by the particular ipad app?
Also, what is the state of wireless midi? I've read some about it but it's not clear to me that this is ready for prime time?
Thanks for these fine tips!
