Setting Key range

Post by iant » Fri Dec 02, 2011 2:34 pm

Hi,
I'm using ableton live 7 and I'm simply trying to extend the key range of a cello so that it plays on notes a few notes higher.I opened up "Cello solo legato" form the ableton library. When I look at the key range it says it plays right across the keyboard, however when I play the instrument does play any higher than the A after C4. Any ideas?

I assume you are looking at the key range of the chain, or instrument rather than the sample range.
In Sampler open up the zone tab, that will show where each sample is mapped to. You can extend the range of the highest sample from there.
It may sound a little un-natural as it extends up out of the instruments natural (sampled) range though.

I believe there's a Viola in the library too, why not use that for the higher notes.
I'm assuming you want the samples to sound like real instruments?

I'm not using viola because I only want it to extend a couple of notes, it should sound fine.
I think "Cello solo legato" is using simpler not sampler as I can't see a zone tab. In the centre it doesn't show a sample but says "Multisample mode". If I right click I can "manage samples" but I still can't see how I set individual range.
"Cello solo legato" is in the standard library so you can have a look.

right click Simpler's header bar, and from the contextual menu choose "Simpler-> Sampler" and it will flip the Simpler into a Sampler.
now you will have access to the zone view.

Simpler is often used by ableton as a wrapper for their instruments, because some people don't possess Sampler. Sampler owners have this ability to edit those presets in Sampler.
