Hey guys, Ive been having a lot of trouble lately writing some really chilled out trancey type breakdowns. Ive been producing for about 7 ish months now and Ive come to realize that Im alot better at writing beats and bass then i am at making something nice sounding. Anyways im looking to make a really warm, feel good sounding breakdown in this song and so ive been experimenting with synths that have some attack on them, cause when i listen to those type of songs i always notice that the synths kinda creep in. But whenever i put an attack on a synth and write out a melody, it sounds really off time. Im not quite sure what im doing wrong, maybe your supposed to draw in the attack on the volume envelopes so that it reaches the highest point at the very end of the note? i dunno im struggling pretty hard so any tips in this area would be appreciated. Also how do you guys usually layer your synths? I usually try to have 1 working in the bass, 1 for mid and either white noise or another synth for the high end.
Heres a track that kind displays what im looking to create... http://soundcloud.com/minnesota/shotgun ... place-feat
Check out the breakdown at 54 seconds in. thanks guy.

Nah, just hook up an arpeggiator to it, and play around with the settings both on the arpeggiator and on the attack. Should be easy enough.

Sporkles can you expain what you mean with the arp a bit more? I think having an arp playing up in the higher frequencies would probably be sound cool, but im talking more about getting those really warm drawn out synths in the mid range ish end, and even low end.

Nudge everything an 8th to the left?
Or instead of a long attack, put a long decay on instead, also experiment with separate filter envelope...
