Yes, I know, quite a simplistic way of putting it but I don't know much about computer systems. Basically, I ordered a computer for music production and it arrived today, I need internet connection on it so I can install and update programs. I don't where to connect and what connections/cables to use to get it to work. I have some ideas. My broadband for example is Virgin and I have Virgin socket on the wall in which my TV box in plugged in, i'm thinking I get a splitter for that (it's sort of a round connection with 1 pin in the middle), but then I don't know how to get that to connect to the LAN Port on the back of my desktop. Someone told me something about a modem router or something? My family have a desktop pc downstairs which allows laptops and ipods and stuff to connect to wifi so i don't need my new desktop to emit wifi to other devices (if this is relevent). I simply need my new desktop to connect to the internet!
Tell me anything you know! What I need to buy, etc. Help will be appreciated.
Thanks!

I would call your internet service provider(ISP) and talk to tech support.
They will be familiar with the interfaces and provide you better support than forum members.
Never heard of Virgin as an ISP, so that right there is a key sign to call them and ask for help.
Goood luck!

Sounds like you have Virgin TV and broadband which goes in to your living room downstairs, with an additional TV feed to your bedroom. Does that sound right? If so, then the socket in your bedroom is for TV only - you can't connect to the internet with it.
Easiest option will be to use the wifi. If your computer hasn't got wifi then you can get a USB wifi adapter for about £10. You just plug it in then follow the instructions and use the same settings as you did for all the other wifi devices in the house.

Guessing you're not in the UK - they're one of the biggest ISP's here.atoggs wrote:Never heard of Virgin as an ISP, so that right there is a key sign to call them and ask for help.

Re: How to connect my computer to the internet.
Okay cheers guys. Would anyone recommend a pci wifi card over a usb wifi stick or vise versa? What are the positives/negatives of either?
Re: How to connect my computer to the internet.
usb sticks for a tower can be realllly crap and slow so make sure you get the fastest one possible.
it will do you for registering software but when it comes to 600mb updates it could get painful.
no idea what the speeds of the usb ones are, just going by what ive heard people say about them.
probably better to invest in a decent speed wifi card.

does the computer downstairs connect to the internet? if so have a look at how it connects, i would have thought virgin supplied some kind of router.
