Midi Clock Sync Delay vs. External Instrument Latency

I am still a bit confused with the way Live handles external instruments sync. I have several hardware synths connected to a MOTU Midiexpress XT interface. I have tested and adjusted each instrument latency in External Instrument and saved that as presets. If I undertand things right, now I need to adjust Midi Clock Delay. The way the Midiexpress handles clock sync is receiving clock in a dedicated sync port that appears listed as any other, and it distributes it to the rest of the connected devices. My question are: is there any relationship between the latency adjusted in the External Instrument and the Midi Clock Sync Delay for each port in the Preferences menu? Is there any suggested procedure to calibrate this with some accuracy beyond trial and error?
