midi controller wheel etc.

Post by spiffincat » Sat Dec 31, 2011 12:37 pm

Hi all, I'm new to live as a sequencer and love the set up.

I have a few newb questions I'm hoping someone would be kind enough to answer.

1. Is there any way I can change pitch bend parameters for a sound I want to alter with my controller wheel? I like to use the wheel sometimes for fifth's sometimes for octaves but I can't find where to change that.

2. Is there any way of creating layered snare sounds to be saved in live's library for later use? I am making kits with impulse and layering the kits and saving them but I'm hoping I can save some time sequencing by having access to the pre-layered snares.

3. When adding midi events manually like a run of high hats is there anyway of changing the default that the events are added with zero velocity? It's a bit of a pain to have to dig each one out with the mouse at the bottom to a reasonable level.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have. This community, the posts here have been a big help to me getting off the ground.

Hello!

1. Yep. Like funken pointed out, it's dependent on the synth. In the Operator for instance, the setting can be found in the global-tab that can be accessed by clicking the area that holds the time, tone and volume knobs. I think most synths should have the parameter (and all native Live instruments definitely do) but where it is found varies case-by-case.

2. You could set up a an instrument rack with several Simplers (or several Impulses with the different samples in identical slots if you so wish) and save that as a preset. You can also load instrument racks into drum rack pads so instrument racks can be a handy way of triggering multiple samples or even mixing samples with synth generated sounds. And I think you could also add several samples into a Sampler and then just overlap their sample zones or something but then you lose the ability to add separate effects or whatever for each sample.

3. I think the default velocity for new notes should always be whatever velocity you've entered last for a note. But there might be something that I'm forgetting here.

Thanks you 2, very helpful. Especially on the second question. It seems in regards to the 3rd one I'd somehow managed to mess up the default of 100 to 0 but got that fixed now.

I am still having some problems with the pitch bend wheel.. my bad I said mod wheel. I can now get some notes bending, still working on how much I can control that with the synth.

However when I record a midi track in Live, the sequencer doesn't record the pitch bend wheel as midi events and upon playback the notes aren't bent. Any advice on that?

Muchly appreciated! Us noobs have it luck with people like yourselves in this community.

Problem seems to be with the particular patch i was using. Bends being recorded now.

Thanks again!
