Maschine running as a plugin in Live 8

Anybody know if there is a trick to getting Maschine to write midi notes in Live? I have everything turned on in preferences (both in Live and Maschine)but when I open Maschine in Ableton it only monitors the audio data not the MIDI. I set up a separate MIDI track and set it to receive from Maschine. When I hit any of the pads Ableton doesn't register it on any MIDI channel. However when I hit play in live Maschine plays as you would expect so it seems to see it partially. Running a Mac on the latest OS.

Only possible if you put Maschine in midi mode.
