Reaktor versus MFL?

Post by JAMM » Thu Jan 12, 2012 4:16 pm

I have reaktor and am thinking about MFL. (Last week 25% OFF)
In the MFL demo i see a lot off "reaktor" type devices so is it worth to upgrade to MFL?
I don,t have the time to create my own MFL devices so for me thats not important.

I also don't make my own devices. I make music and audio.

There are lots of M4L devices. I love Density M4L, which was the main reason I upgraded. Instant Haus is fun and easily modified with your own samples. You get a bunch of the old Pluggo stuff which has some neat things in it. I've mostly been happy with it through it does seem to make Live less stable--I think all my crashes in the last 6-8 months have been M4L related (not that many, mind you).

That said, Reaktor's user library is incredible and many years ahead of M4L's.

It's better to compare MAx 6 and reaktor 5.6. I'm not a max person but have read that their are limitation in MFL. Even if you never want to make your own device you could get lost in the reaktor user library forever. Also folks are really nice about helping and teaching once you should that your trying.

I've had Reaktor since Reaktor 3, never became much of a builder though. I've had M4L since it's release, and built a lot of useful things for myself.

I would say at this point if your not interested in building, pass on it. Most of the best ensembles in Reaktor, when somewhat emulated in M4L are not any better, nor more CPU friendly. More times than not I think Reaktor stuff performs AND sounds better. HOWEVER, it's the little things in M4L that really shine. For example a super simple side chain ducker that I made in M4L, takes in Midi notes, and has 2 knobs, 1 for amount and one for release. It always ducks perfectly. I cant do that in Reaktor. Also I cant make little toggle functions that are one off button presses dialing various send amounts on various tracks, not in Reaktor. M4L excells at that stuff.

So if yous not AT ALL interested in building, not even a little bit, M4L might not be for you.

And don't forget all the jitter stuff, that is a real bonus (visual etc.) that you don't have with Reaktor

I've heard it described as Reaktor is like owning a bunch of audio and midi Legos so you can build your own stuff while max/msp is like owning the Lego factory to make your own Lego bricks.

given that Cycling 74 and Ableton are very cozy with each other and Reaktor is a Native Instruments product you might want to choose the one that goes with the music stuff you already use.

they're both pretty prolific. I ended up getting both, wait for sales.

demo, demo, demo.

if you're planning on not building yourself;

choose Reaktor for an unlimited library of both sound mangling and sound making devices,
MFL for Live tailored utilitarian devices that'll expand what is normally possible with Live..

thanks guys for the advice. I think i,m gonna wait.

Still think that ableton should integrate MFL in version 9 because i think that MFL stands in the way off the live 9 development. Put them together and things are moving in the right direction.
