Slice to MIDI question - sliced midi blocks are off beat ?

Slice to MIDI question - sliced midi blocks are off beat ?

Hey everyone, this is really driving me crazy, maybe because it's late, but it's really throwing me off...

I dragged a song into a session clip, set the start marker at the beginning of the first transient and set original tempo of the song, right click - warp from here (straight), then created warp markers every 1/4 bar and dragged them to be exactly on beat. I zoomed into to ensure they are exactly on each 1/4 bar.

Next, I right click the clip in session view and choose "Slice to new MIDI track". I had the top box set to "Warp Marker" and the other box to "Built-in 0 Vel" (I tried other presets and they do the same)...then I get this as a result...

As you can see, the midi chunks are off beat - why????

When you slice by warp marker position it creates each slice starting exactly where the warp markers are set but it doesn't actually warp the audio and give those chunks in the result. It's really just overloading the use of warp points as a way to set some arbitrary slice points.

For something like slicing on even beat divisions I'd just slice on that division instead of by warp marker and then tweak the start point of the individual samples in their Simpler/Sampler instances.

Another thing you could try is to resample your loops warped loop. Then slice the new sample on the beat division you want. Since all of the beats should hit dead on their wanted grid points in the new sample you shouldn't then need adjust the start points of the samples.

Aw man, that just did not occur to me at all. This was really driving me nuts, so thanks. I think I'm going to try your second suggestion - resampling my warped loop and then slicing THAT loop. I just wish it was a little bit more clear that slicing a warped loop like that doesn't warp the new sliced bits--or maybe a preset or setting to do that...

That's what i do. Just make sure whatever warp method you're using is the one that negatively affects the sound the least.

You can also just go Ctrl+A > Ctrl+U (select all > quantize) but that will only work depending on what kind of audio you're slicing.

Hmm... Thinking about this some more. I think it may actually slice on the warped audio if you don't slice by warp marker. Try placing your warp markers and then moving them so that the transients line up on the solid beat division lines. Then, instead of slicing by warp marker (which will cut the slices wherever the warp markers ended up after you moved them around to move the transients) slice by 1/4 beat (or whatever). No resampling necessary.

and consolidate will go a little faster than resample. Make sure it sounds correct and then slice by division is the easiest for me. I do warp markers if it's a weird untimed type thing, otherwise i make ableton do the work
