why arnt my midi mappings working

I'm new to ableton and have watched dozens of "how to midi map" videos and still can't figure this out.

my mpk49 works perfectly when i select a keyboard or drum rack but when i go into midi mapping mode its useless. i select perimeters and turn nobs but the mappings don't show up in the mapping browser and of course it doesn't work.

i bought my mpk of craiglist and it didn't come with the software disc if thats the problem I'm having trouble finding the software download online.

In Preferences make sure you have "Remote" in
