midi/usb interface

i did a show a couple nights ago using more midi gear than i normally do. using ableton i had an alesis q25, 2 launch pads, a korg sampler, novation nio, running everything through a powered usb hub into my mac book pro, then out through novation nio. 30 minutes into the set, half the midi devices started acting strange and some cut out completely. in the end i was left with only the korg sampler and one launchpad working. anyone know of an inexpensive solution? a powered usb hub specifically for midi? i'm assuming it's the hub that needs more juice since Ableton seems to be capable of many handling many devices......or if anyone has run into the same issues as me and has some insight.. . much thanks!!
