Logic midi mapping >>>>>>>>>>>>>> ableton midi mapping

Post by mrksksks » Thu Mar 01, 2012 12:14 pm

I just discovered Logic :

I plugged my uc 33 midi controller
assigned a couple of parameters of my most-used plugins/vst
close my project...(without saving)

then, I opened a new project, imported the same vst and WHAT ?!?! Logic recognized my midi controller and my vst and auto map them like I did for the first time!

woww

Ableton, you reeeeeeeeeally need to improve your Midi implementation

Hope to see something like this in your future version

just saying!

I would not like to have this automatic feature in live

but I agree live lacks some midi mappings utilities, to be able to save some midi mappings independantly from the sets and recall them when you want...

ableton still lacks some major features in the midi department IMO (as for good midi editor tools to draw curves, automations, a better clip midi edition window, better vst multichannel handling... and so on...)

How did you do that?!

Every time I map something in Logic, the settings get lost upon closing Logic; or they get messed up, some don't work anymore or what ever. I find MIDI mapping in Live much more reliable. Once you wrap your head around the fact that Live stores its mappings per Live set only..

I used Logic for well over 10 years and the midi functionality has barely changed - mostly because it didn't have to! The midi routing options are streets ahead of Live. Max for Live helps somewhat, but you still need to use workarounds to get complex midi routing between tracks. For me, this is where Live needs to catch up. And as the previous poster says, midi editing is also nowhere near Logic yet or indeed some other DAWS yet. I'm not Live bashing, as it does make up in terms of an extremely efficient workflow and that is why I use it.

But I don't know if automatically saving midi mappings for plugins is a good idea. What happens if you map the same controller in 2 different sets to different plugins and then go to use both plugins in a new set? Maybe it is not an issue if you use the same plugins all the time, and want the same knobs to control the same parameters all the time, but I certainly don't. I don't know - I think Live's midi mapping works really well, though again I agree with the previous poster that the ability to save midi mappings would be a good inclusion.

I did it before watching it, so easy man! :)

Yes, indeed it can't be annoying...but for me, it would be awesome.
