Annoying "how can i sound like..." question.
Hi everyone,
I hate these questions as much as anyone else, but, I also love making music, so I'm going to ask:
The synth sound in world hold on, and also in rock this party by Bob Sinclar, I don't know how to name that type of sound (bass? stab?). But I'd quite like to get a hold of it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDBbEG-0pfQ it appears on the 4th and the 7th of each bar (if we divide a bar of music into 32nds, this sound is on the 4th and 7th 32rnds of each bar) [PLEASE EXCUSE MY INCREDIBLY POOR KNOWLEDGE OF MUSICAL TERMINOLOGY]
if anyone can name a preset / sample pack / software synth / plug in that has that sound, it would be great. I need it for my electro-folk project that i'm trying to do (it's going to be very subtly applied).

Re: Annoying "how can i sound like..." question.
More to the point how can you improve on that sound? How can you make it yours?
Re: Annoying "how can i sound like..." question.
Like a sample? or how to create it using a synth?joshrrr wrote:But I'd quite like to get a hold of it.
If you have a (soft)synth and try tweaking it for an hour, I bet you a dollar youre gonna get very close.
Re: Annoying "how can i sound like..." question.
Hello,
Bagatell: I don't want to improve on the sound, or make it my own. Specifically, I want people to hear it and instantly think "isn't that strange, it's a well known house music synth in the middle of an otherwise acoustic song". It has to be recognisable, otherwise I would just use a similar sound I made myself.
Rabalder: I have been playing with the instrument rack in ableton and also the pure magnetik retro synth pack and have got nowhere (after much more than one hour...). I don't have any other software synths. A sample would be fine, but i'd prefer to have a synth that does it.

Do you want it to be recognisable as specifically that sound from that track? If so, then the only realistic way to have the effect you describe is to sample it.
If you want it to be recognisable as just a standard generic sound that is pretty common in this sort of stuff.. then just get any soft synth, start with a square wave oscillator and tweak away. As has been said above, you'll find that sound pretty quickly.

Mharris: Perhaps I'll look into downloading a soft synth with a square wave oscillator, although I did already say that I'd tried playing around with soft synths that I have. Maybe I'll try downloading an operator style synth, I think I got some a while ago as part of a pack from the excellent KVR audio.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Nah I wouldn't bother with an "operator style" (FM) synth. You dont need any of the quirks that FM synthesis provides. In fact it will probably make your life more difficult if you're not that familiar with synthesis in general.
Any virtual analog style synth would probably be your best bet, and anything that has some sort of "organ" preset like this will get you in the right sort of area (albeit with plenty of tweaking needed).
Actually, if you have Ableton's Analog, the Organ-Drawbars 2 preset would be a good place to start. But to be honest, if you know what you're doing then it isn't any closer than what could be achieved in 5 mintues of playing around.
Re: Annoying "how can i sound like..." question.
Do you mean the organ bass?
If so, I can't help thinking that this thread might be slightly tongue in cheek...
Anyway, it's the Korg M1 preset organ. Easy to find samples of this I'm sure.
