Why use recycle?

Post by TinTinol » Sat Mar 26, 2005 7:12 pm

Before i came over Live i used Propellerheads Recycle alot to chop up my drumloops..

Is there any good reasons for still using this program when you got Live? :?:

You might if you want to save individual drum hits from a loop to make a drum kit, etc.

yeah, although you can use live to truncate clips and then drop them into impulse, it isn't exactly precise, and the results are often a bit iffy.
mbp 2.66, osx 10.6.8, 8GB ram.

YES YES YES.

Man - the dynamics on recycle rock - use your envelopes for each slice to really make your beats pump - then export 'em.

Another area that Recycle is superior to Live is with syncopated, or "groovy" beats. Live's "beats" mode of warping slices exaclty on the 8th, 16th, or whateverth notes, ingoring where the actual drum lies. That can cause some problems with the attack of drums that are slightly ahead of time when you speed up the tempo. Recycle 'em first, export as a wav (or aiff) at the tempo you want, and import into Live - you'll get MUCH better results.

Recycle is also useful for grabbing grooves as MIDI files. Export a midi file from your loop in Recycle, then bring it into Live. Use it to trigger your Impulse (or other drum machine, I like Battery 2). You'll have to keep the timing and replace the notes on the piano roll properly - but you'll keep the timings if you're careful. Use this MIDI file to construct your bassline and hooks too, and now EVERYTHING is sync'ed to that funky groove you got goin on!

Recycle is good if you have RMX for converting waves to rex for import....

If you have Intakt which imports rex it makes loops run better.....

If you just have Phatmatik (free) it will run in Live with Recycle converted rex. and map loops to the keyboard./

Should be nice in a next version if you could play the individual slices through midi just like a rex file. Phatmatik(pro) is really nice for that!

The link on www.glaresoft.com is dead to the free version.
Anyone?

Ps: i really like the IDRUM as a vst!!!

Well, what if you like something you've done in Live but need to drop one of the samples by 3 semitones? Sure, you can do that in Live but in most cases it won't sound so great. However, if you transpose the pitch in an external editor, it'll usually sound better. Since the software doesn't have work in real time, it can use different algorithms to shift the pitch (i.e. something that sounds better than granular resynthesis, such as MPEX).

So - if you have ReCycle configured as your default editor in Live - just click the Edit button to open the sample in ReCycle, drop the pitch, click Save, deactivate Warp and voila...a high quality transposed sample in Live.

Also - very useful if you use the fabulous Stylus Remix. Convert any loop to a Rex file put it into Stylus and get the full power of the best drum machine/mangler there is...

Indeed. I've converted tons of pitched material to rex for import into RMX. Loads of fun!

Exactly, certain software such as Stylus RMX, GURU, Elab Obcession, Reason and etc. used the rex file format an recommend Recycle to convert to that format.
