Several years ago, my friend Randy and I were buying VSTs left and right. There were a few issues with that approach:
-we never got a solid understanding of any VST because we were too busy being gearwhores
-whenever we got a new computer and transferred songs, we'd have to install ALL those VSTs
Since then my friend and I have taken the "ableton suite has everything we need" approach. We've been doing this for several years now.
I must admit that I always felt like my sound was missing something, but then again I think most intermediate producers feel this way.
More recently, I took a music production class. He showed me NI Massive. I was pretty impressed with how easy it was to use, how quickly he was able to get good sounds out of it. He also swore by FabFilter.
So my question is: Am I naive to think that I should be able to do everything I want JUST using ableton suite?

a thought to consider :
with 3rd party vsts that have midi mapping..
one can record clip envelopes..
