copy / paste isn't considered recording automation into session view...
that's false advertising...

for one there is a big big flaw.. that it will NOT sound the same as when you recorded it...
explanatione :
automation in the arrangement is 'absolute' ..controlling a parameter 1:1...
while clip automation is relative to the current parameter value (usually 'up to...' by %)
..so you see the values will not change the same..

there is an oldskool way to record automation to clips...
it involves recording midi CCs into dummy clips
actually... I have an m4l device I've made that takes advantage of that...
I'll post it soon on max4live...

That's why he said to turn the macros right up.

So yeah, this is usable, but a bit messy. Thanks for posting anyway.

you don't get it..
if you need to 'stop'... copy/paste...go back to arrangement..delete then why not just use a mouse to draw in the curve from the get go ?
yeah I guess if you put all knobs automated at 100% then it's semi-accurate... (which is good enough for me..)

I got it, thanks. I've done this before. I could explain situations where I thought it was useful and others where it turned out to be a hassle. But since you're both telling me I don't understand, I won't bother.

how is this solution "recording automation into session view clips?"
I'd say it's definitely false advertisement, and takes way more time than just clicking a parameter going into the clip envelope and drawing it out.
Session view clip automation CAN be done with some hacks, OR with CC's but it looks steppy as shit.
I think what people have been asking for is something more absolute, and complementary to other Live features.
for example
using an APC40
In "session view," duh
I bluehand a device on a track
I push record arm for that track from my APC40
twist knobs
release record arm
what was recorded from my knob twisting is played back exactly how I did it
no need to turn knobs to 100% and all that crap
it just works
automation looks good not steppy

whats not to get about how awesome this would be, OR how awesome it IS if you are using an external synthesizer.

come to think of it, if there was a midi mappable button in clip view that did something like place 1 automation marker for every parameter on this track, in this clip, you would also be able to take care of store/recall parameters per clip. Another feature Live has been lacking since day one.

would be great to have a simple Max device, the actual ones are a bit messy too.

I'll wait for it!

I've done that along with many other things

And NO, it's not that I simply want automation in session, I have that?
I want to record it in session, (not at all what your tutorial is about)
without it looking steppy,
without turning all my knobs to 100% or whatever.

dont get me wrong I applaud your efforts
along with the M4L efforts, and the IAC driver attempts.
Yet these hacks are still just sub par workarounds for something that could be seamless and effortless, using knobs instead of drawing or clicking.

I made comments above about false advertisement because I feel like it's important to be specific in regards to features and requests about features.
There's a lot of false claims when it comes to workarounds in Live, your not the only one who has made some.
Scratching Clips in Ms Pinky comes to mind as well.

Actual, FO REAL, recording automation in session would be a huge leap in making Live a performance tool.
performance as in using Live and a laptop, "live" on stage, in front of people, producing music in front of an audience.

not performance as in Live has x amount of features.

the title should be changed to something like...
'how to transfer your recorded automation to clip envelopes'

precisely accurate.

funken wrote:How hard is it? Watch this 54 second movie I made demonstrating it done...
demonstrating you having to record into arrangement view, stop playback, and copy paste into session.

hold on audience, while I stop the music so I can get this bitchin knob automation into session view.

Why even bother with midi automation in session view? Just configure some macros and record your knob movements and twists on your midi track as audio on a separate track.

no, I am just clarifying the misleading title.
I feel it's important to be clear about this stuff.
funken wrote:I want the title to reflect what people are looking for, to reflect their problem.
this^ is misleading, unclear, false claims.

record automation into session view and prove to me it does not look like this.

I would be forever grateful.

I wasn't trying to make you change the OP, if people read through threads completely they would understand immediately what this was about.
Then YOU would have gotten their attention, and the responses would have clarified, and people could decide if this was the "best solution so far" for themselves.

win win, i guess
