The End Goal: Make the Clip Viewer show whatever clip is currently playing by default. Make 'Select On Launch' mode NOT effect the Device Control knobs.
The Reasoning:
1. Engaging 'Select On Launch' is very intuitive for live performance. The Problem with this option is that if you are currently focussed on the Master Channel and working some FX in Track view, when you launch a new clip on a different track, your Device Control knobs (APC40) jump to the new track. I think it is safe to assume that in a point of transition (Clip Changing) that the performer is most likely wanting to effect the previous content. Or to put it another way, I rarely launch a clip and immediately start effecting it. However, I very often want to effect a clip that I'm getting ready to depart from (ie. creating a build / drop type scenario)
- I realize that this is what the 'Lock to Device' function is for, but that is just one more step to remember during a performance and is less intuitive/ easy to get mesed up or lost, since APC40s don't have any text based visual feedback to let you know what the Device Control knobs are assigned to..
2. Turning 'Select on Launch' Off is more intuitive as far as Devices and the Track view are concerned, but now I have to manually select a given clip with my mouse in order to refocus the Clip View to whatever is happening currently.
I would argue that in the majority of cases, you would always want the Clip view to show the clip that is currently playing. One exception would be if you were trying to edit a clip or warp a clip, while you were in the middle of a performance, but I don't imagine there being a great need for this. Even if I were doing some task like this, then I would already be in the mode of using my track pad to manually select a clip.
Further more, sometimes in this mode, you switch to Clip View and there is nothing there, no clip selected. this is just a waste of the interface.
The Bottom Line
- I feel that it is an intuitive way to perform under the assumption that the performer wants to manually select what the Device Control knobs are controlling, and NOT to have them change automatically in any way. (Select On Launch = Off)
- But I think it is also a good assumption that, during a performance, the performer generally wants to utilize the 'Clip/Track' toggle on the APC40 to view what clips are playing and to not see an empty viewer.
Perhaps the change should be not adding a 3rd option, but editing how the 2 options work. for instance:
Change 'Select On Launch = ON' to ONLY control the Clip View so that your Device Control Knobs don't jump.
Or
Change 'Select On Launch = OFF' to have the Clip Viewer default to show whichever clip is currently playing. Then you can manually select a different clip with your mouse if you need to. Then when you leave the Clip View and return to it, it will default to whichever clip is playing.
Or do Both of these things.

Hello, has this been addressed in any way? I totally agree with kclarkmusic on his request.
