Since live 9 is just round the corner and m4l is inc in the upgrade for suite
is it worth buying M4L now?

I would wait.
M4L is great, but it's time consuming to some degree. If you dont already have it, wait.
The new devices, and I imagine updated help files, will make it easier to learn with the new version.

You could use the demo to get your head around it for the next couple of months, then just get it bundled with 9.
Waste of money to buy it now.

Worth owning, absolutely! Worth buying NOW? not so much! I'm not getting Suite, but own M4L, so I am eagerly awaiting news on how upgrades will work for Live 8 + max4Live owners.
